Chapter 21: The Brother
He came up the stairs at dusk.
I heard him before I saw him. Boots on broken stone, slow and even.
Ren stood up.
The man who came over the top of the stairs was younger than Ren.
Same face. Same eyes. Same way of standing with his weight on the back foot.
He was wearing a shinigami coat with the red stitching at the collar.
He had a sword in his hand.
He stopped when he saw Ren.
"Jun," Ren said.
The man didn't answer.
"Jun."
"You shouldn't be here," the man said.
"Neither should you."
"I'm where I'm supposed to be."
"With Luca?"
"With the army."
Ren took a step toward him.
"You've been gone four years," he said.
"I know."
"I looked for you."
"I know."
"I went to every waystation from here to the coast."
"I know."
Ren stopped.
"Why didn't you write," he said.
