Chapter 6: The Courier's Mark

Ren came back at midday.

He walked into the yard from the west road, hands open, same as the first time.

He looked at the burned house. He looked at Dad sitting on the chopping block.

He didn't ask what happened. He'd have seen the smoke from the ridge.

"Where were you?" I said.

"Scouting."

"Scouting what?"

"Whether more of them were coming."

"Were they?"

"No."

He said it flat, like that settled it.

I walked up to him and took hold of his left sleeve.

He let me. That surprised me.

I shoved the sleeve up past his elbow.

There was a brand on the inside of his forearm. Old scar tissue, raised, in the shape of a small crown.

Luca's mark.

Ren looked down at his own arm like it belonged to somebody else.

"You were his courier," I said.

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"Six years."

"You carried messages all over Amantia."

"I carried messages for the king," Ren said. "That's all I did."

"That's not all you did."

He pulled his sleeve back down.

"I was nineteen when I took the work," he said. "My family lived in the shinigami lands. My father was a scribe. When Luca took the throne, scribes were the first people he needed, and the first people he watched."

"So you worked for him."

"I worked for him."

Min-jun was standing by the oak tree, listening.

He didn't say anything.

I waited for him to say something.

He didn't.

"You knew this whole time," I said to him.
