Chapter 21: The Account Book

Elena's POV

Silvia stood on the pavement outside the bakery at six in the morning with her coat buttoned wrong.

She had a canvas bag in one hand and her mother's rosary in the other.

I opened the street door and did not let her in.

"I have something for you," she said.

"I don't want anything from you."

"You'll want this."

She held out the bag.

I took it and looked inside.

It was a black account book, the kind she had kept for the Barzinis for eleven years, with a rubber band round it.

"Every payment to the Montclair clinic," Silvia said. "Three years of it. Marco signed each page himself."

"Why bring it to me?"

"Because he's going to say it was me." Her voice cracked. "He'll say I ran the books and I ordered the work. He will, Elena. I've watched him do it to other people."

I stepped back, and she came into the dark stairwell and stood against the wall.

She was shaking.

She was only a frightened woman of thirty-three at the end of a long lie.

"How did you find this place?" I said.

"Rosaria's driver brought me. She told him to take me to you."

"I knew," she said. "After the second one, the doctor told me the cells were doing nothing. I could have said so."
