Chapter 28: Montauk
Nicholas's hand went still on mine.
I looked at the phone for a second.
"Not at the bar," I said. "Not in a corner. At dinner, on the microphone, so everyone hears it at once."
Bryant went quiet.
Then he laughed, delighted.
"After the first dance. Wear something that isn't blue."
He hung up.
Nicholas looked at me.
"You're not going to apologize."
"I'm going to say something into a microphone."
At eight the next morning he was on his back in our garage.
He tucked a camera the size of a matchbox behind the front bumper of my father's sedan, pointed back along the frame rail.
"It records to its own card and sends over the cell network," he said. "It pings us both. Nobody's seen this one."
My parents rode out with the driver in the gray sedan.
Nicholas and I followed in his truck.
The Hartley house sat alone at the end of a long drive on the bluffs, white and huge, with the ocean behind it.
There was a tent on the lawn big enough for four hundred people.
Men in white jackets took every car at the front steps and drove it away behind a tall hedge.
