Chapter 37: Two Lines
"What are you counting?" Nicholas said.
"Weeks."
He crouched down in front of me on the bathroom tile.
He looked at my face, then at my fingers, then at my face again.
I watched him do the arithmetic.
He was faster at it than I was.
"Don't move," he said.
He was gone twenty minutes.
He came back from the all-night pharmacy on Lexington in his sweatpants and a Grizzlies cap, with a paper bag in each hand.
"I didn't know which kind was best," he said. "So I got all the kinds."
There were six boxes.
I read the back of one while he sat on the edge of the tub and read the back of another.
"This one says three minutes," he said.
"So does this one."
"Then we do two. Independent samples."
"Nicholas."
"I'd like to see the reading twice."
I laughed so hard I had to hold onto the sink.
Then I shut him out of the bathroom and did two.
I set them side by side on the marble by the faucet and opened the door.
He came in and stood next to me.
Neither of us looked down.
He had his watch in his hand.
In my last life I had stood over a sink like this one, in a different bathroom, every month for five years.
