Chapter 40: The Valet
I sat on the edge of the bed in my stockings and didn't move.
Up to a door.
The restaurant in Montauk had a gravel lot behind it and a little covered stand out front with a valet in a red jacket.
We came out at twenty to ten.
It was cold for April, with wind off the water, and my mother had taken off her green scarf and wound it around my neck.
My father gave the valet the ticket.
The boy jogged around the side of the building into the dark.
A minute later the headlights came swinging around the corner, and he pulled the car up to the stand, and got out, and held the door.
I remembered that.
I remembered my father saying something about the waiter's mustache, and laughing, and getting in behind him.
And I remembered one more thing, which I had never let myself look at straight.
While the valet was holding the door, I glanced past him down the side of the building, toward the back lot.
At the far end, by the hedge, a flashlight clicked off.
