Chapter 48: The Same Sky
Nicholas came out of the kitchen with a dish towel over his shoulder.
He looked at me on the stairs, and at the stair runner, and at my hand on the banister.
For one second his face went completely white.
Then it went completely calm, the way it had on Montauk Highway with the needle past ninety.
"Okay," he said. "Don't come down. I'm coming up."
He took the plate out of my hand and set it on a step.
He put one arm around my back and the other under my elbow.
"The bag is by the door," he said. "The car is out front. The doctor's number is the first one in my phone and the second one in yours. I've timed the drive eleven times. Twenty-two minutes at this hour."
"You timed it eleven times?"
"Twelve with tonight."
The first real pain came on the bottom step.
I grabbed his sweater with both fists and held on, and he stood there and let me, and looked at his watch over my head.
"Fifty seconds," he said when it let go. "That's a good one. Textbook."
"Don't grade it."
"Sorry. Strong work."
The hospital was on the East Side, by the river.
My doctor met us on the fourth floor in a sweatshirt, her red glasses on their chain.
"Two weeks early," she said. "Of course. Your mother was early too. Ferraros don't wait to be invited."
My parents arrived forty minutes behind us.
I heard my mother in the hall before I saw her, asking a nurse a question in the voice she used on contractors.
