Chapter 15: The Debt
The whole pack stood on the hall green in the grey before sunrise.
Four hundred wolves, most of them in coats over nightclothes, with their breath showing in the cold.
The Stone Book lay open on its pedestal, and Odessa stood beside it in black wool and her pearls.
She had not slept.
I could tell, because she had pinned her hair twice.
Lucan stood at my left shoulder.
Hattie stood at my right with a canvas bag on her back that was heavier than she was.
"Ember Ridge," Odessa said, in her council voice. "My son is not here, and I will not shame him by guessing why. I stand for him."
A low murmur went through the crowd.
"Two nights ago the Luna signed this book and left her husband. Tonight I must tell you what she took with her."
"I took my mother's lamp," I said.
Someone laughed and was hushed.
"Four hundred and ten thousand dollars sat in the winter fund in March," Odessa said. "Ninety remain. Eloise Garrow kept those books alone. Nobody else was permitted to touch them. Whose hand is on the ledger?"
She held up a book bound in green cloth.
It was my ledger, or the public copy of it, and the initials E.G. ran down the margin beside every entry.
"Two hundred thousand dollars left that account," Odessa said. "She gave it away, and she gave herself a convenient divorce. Strike her name from this book. Let her explain the Lycan's gold to the elders in a cell."
"Lycan gold?" Lucan said mildly.
"The bank in Blackmoor," Odessa said. "Where else would it go?"
I stepped up to the pedestal.
"Hattie," I said.
