Chapter 7: The Mark Savannah Doesn't Have

Nobody in the hall breathed for a moment.

Savannah let her hair fall and put her hands over her face.

"It didn't take," she said into her palms. "He bit me three weeks ago. It healed over like a scratch."

"Savannah," Dalton said.

"You told me it was normal. You said the Goddess sometimes takes her time."

"She does!"

"Not for a month," the oldest elder said. "Never for a month."

He did not raise his voice.

He looked at Dalton for a long moment.

"A fated mate who bears no mark is not a fated mate, Alpha. The announcement at the harvest gathering was made before the whole pack, and it was false."

"I felt it," Dalton said. "I felt it when I saw her. I know what a mate feels like."

"Do you?" I said.

I had not meant to say it aloud.

The whole table turned.

"You never felt it with me," I said. "Six years. Not once."

"That was different."

"It was exactly the same. Your bite didn't take on me either."

I heard the words as they left my mouth, and I stood very still.

I had never said that to anyone, not even to Hattie.

Odessa's folded hands went tight.

"Eloise," she said, softly. "This is not the place."

"You're the one who told me it was nothing," I said. "You told me some wolves just don't scar, and it would settle with time."

"It did settle."

"It never settled. I wear a scarf because I was told to hide an ugly scar that never became a mark."

The hall was so quiet that I could hear a spoon turning over in somebody's saucer.

Dalton stared at me.
