Chapter 14: The Boat Over the Bed
Jocelyn held the photograph by one corner.
"He sent someone to Montreal," she said. "He sent someone to him."
"Then the train is finished," I said.
"The train was finished the minute that man opened his envelope." She dropped the photo on the table. "I'm not taking one more step in this city while he decides when I'm allowed to leave."
Ethan pulled out a chair and sat down.
"You asked for a day," I said.
"I asked for a day, and I've had twelve minutes." He looked up. "Is my grandmother awake?"
She was.
She was on the landing in her dressing gown with her cane, and I suspect she had been there since the doorbell.
"I wondered when somebody would ask me," she said.
"Ask you what?"
"What's over my bed."
It was a small watercolor in a plain frame, a pale sea and one gray boat, and I had passed it every day without looking.
"A Homer," said the grandmother. "My husband bought it for four hundred dollars in 1961 because he liked the boat. A man from the museum told me last year it would fetch three million at auction."
Ethan stared at her.
"You never said a word."
"You never needed it. The house was safe, or I thought so." She tapped the cane. "Cornelia Prescott is a very rude woman, Ethan. I would be delighted to sell her a lesson."
"Gran."
"Take the boat down before I change my mind."
He took it down.
It took two weeks of telephone calls and one man in a gray suit with a locked case to turn the boat into a check.
On the twenty-eighth of May, a Tuesday, we stood in the marble lobby of the Prescott Foundation at half past ten.
