Chapter 15: Table Four
The Sturgises have held table four at the Prescott Gala since 1974.
The grandmother bought it again in January, before anyone had heard of me, and Cornelia could not take it back without explaining why.
So on Saturday the twenty-second of June we sat in the Prescott Foundation ballroom under three chandeliers, in front of an empty chair.
It was the chair at the head table with a card that read, Guest of Honor, Miss Jocelyn Winslow.
Jocelyn was home on Beacon Hill with a sketchbook and a locked door.
"They'll talk about the chair all night," Ethan said.
"Good," said the grandmother, buttering a roll. "Let them."
After the fish course, Leighton stood up.
He wore a black tuxedo and no trench coat, and he tapped the microphone twice.
"Friends of the Foundation," he said. "Tonight is meant to honor a young woman who hasn't come."
A few people laughed politely.
"I'd like to tell you why," he said.
He looked straight at table four.
"Her sister keeps her from us."
My stomach turned over.
"Audra Winslow married Ethan Sturgis last October," Leighton said. "Six months before my mother's reception. She never told a soul. I find that interesting, and I think you will too."
He took a folded paper out of his jacket.
"A friend of the Foundation found this in a lawyer's file. It's called an Agreement of Marriage."
Ethan went rigid beside me.
"It says that Miss Winslow is to be Mr. Sturgis's wife for exactly one year. It says Mr. Sturgis's grandmother will then sign over a house. It says in clause six, and I'm quoting, 'neither party shall form a romantic attachment.'"
