Chapter 14: Tuesday at Seven

"Sit down," Wyatt said. "Please."

"I'd rather stand."

"Then I'll stand too."

He shut the office door behind him and leaned on it, with the swelling under his eye going darker by the minute.

I held up the card.

"Where did you get this?"

"You gave it to me."

"I have never met you before March."

"You met me five years ago in March," he said. "You don't remember it, and I've been grateful for that every day since."

The monitor in the hall beeped twice and went quiet.

"I was a surgeon's resident in Portland," he said. "My wife was in the passenger seat. I had been drinking since noon at a hospital fundraiser, and I told myself I was fine to drive."

"I put the car into a bridge pillar on Route 26. She died at the scene."

I didn't say anything.

My hand had started to shake around the card, and I let it.

"They brought me to your ER with a cracked rib and a broken nose. I still had her blood on my sleeve."

"A tech came in to take my blood pressure, and I took a swing at her."

"That was me?" I said.

"A woman in blue scrubs, with a ponytail. I swung at her because she was the closest person alive. I missed and hit the cart."

He said it flatly.

"I walked out through the ambulance doors with a hospital band on my wrist. Nobody could stop me, because I'm six foot three."

"And I followed you."

"You did. Do you remember that part?"

"No," I said.

"Why would you? You saw a hundred of us." He almost smiled. "I went up the on-ramp to the highway. I meant to walk into the first truck."
