Chapter 17: Lunch With Sherilyn
Sherilyn had chosen the Garden Room at the Fox Hollow Club, because it was full of women who knew her name.
The walls were glass, the tablecloths were pale peach, and every table held a spray of white orchids.
She sat at the far corner in her peach cashmere, with her pearls at her throat.
She watched me cross the whole length of the room.
She did not stand.
"Thora, darling. You look as though you came straight from work."
"I did."
"How brave of you, to wear the smock." She turned a cheek, and I kissed the air beside it. "Sit. I've ordered you the salmon."
I sat, and I set my phone face down beside the bread plate, with my thumb over the screen.
The red dot had been running since the car.
"I'm glad you came," Sherilyn said. "Hollister tells me you cried beautifully."
"It was a hard week."
"It will be a harder one."
She buttered a roll with small, exact strokes.
