Chapter 24: Thanksgiving

Danielle smiled.

She'd gotten what she drove three hours for.

"Think about December first," she said to Kendrick. "The offer's good until noon."

She walked away through the frozen orchard in her white coat, and she didn't look back once.

I heard her car start on the farm road.

Then it was just the two of us and the crows.

"Say something," I said.

"I proposed to her."

"Something I don't know."

He went down the steps into the ice house and came back with his coat.

He didn't put it on.

He put it around my shoulders.

"Your father found the clause in June," he said. "But Leonard found him in April."

"He called me to Boston. Just me. He'd been watching the payments."

"He knew Thomas was behind. He knew how far."

"He sat me in that booth and said he had a solution."

"Danielle," I said.

"Marry her, and he'd tear up the whole four million. A wedding present. Thomas keeps his half and his house and his pride. Nobody ever has to know."

"And all it cost was you."

"All it cost was me," Kendrick said. "That seemed cheap in April."

I looked at him.

"Did you love her?"
