Chapter 8: Route Seven
I crossed Newbury Street without looking.
A cab blew its horn at me.
I didn't care.
I yanked his passenger door open and leaned down.
"Are you following me?"
"Yes," Kendrick said. "Get in."
"I have a bus ticket."
"You have a bus ticket for four-fifteen, and it's going to rain in the Pike tunnel by four," he said. "Get in, Genevieve."
I got in because I wanted to scream at him somewhere he couldn't walk away.
He pulled out into traffic.
For ten minutes neither of us spoke.
The city went past, grey and wet.
On the Pike the first drops hit the windshield.
"How did you know?" I said.
"Danielle told me this morning. She thought it was funny."
"Everything's funny to Danielle."
"Not everything."
He drove with one hand on the wheel and the other on his knee, like he'd driven this road a thousand times.
He had.
Every time my father had a meeting in Boston, Kendrick drove him.
"What did he show you?" he said.
I took the blue folder out of my bag and put it on the dashboard in front of him.
He glanced at the letterhead.
He didn't even open it.
"Hartford," he said. "That firm has done Leonard's dirty work for ten years. They'd call the Mona Lisa a forgery for the right fee."
"So you say."
"So I say."
"It says you forged his signature."
"It says what Leonard paid it to say."
The rain came harder.
He turned the wipers up.
"Why are you wiring millions of dollars to Harborline Capital?"
"That's my business."
"It's my father's business. It's my name on the building."
"It's half your name," he said. "The other half is mine."
There it was.
The old thing.
It had been under every word we'd said to each other since I was fifteen.
That was the year he showed up in my father's kitchen in a dead man's watch.
"You took my job," I said.
"I didn't take anything. He gave it to me."
"I was born on that hill. I'd been working events since I could see over the tables."
"And he made you CEO at twenty-nine because you were a man in a suit."
"He made me CEO because you threw a wine glass at the wall in his study."
"You told him you'd rather die than work under me."
I stared at him.
