Chapter 13: The Band
Gareth Wincott stood on the lake house porch and did not look at the shirt I was wearing.
Rhys came up behind me in his trousers and put one hand flat on the doorframe above my head.
Gareth saw that, and he looked at the floorboards.
"How did you find this place?" Rhys asked.
"Your assistant gave me the address. I told her it was about Nesta." Gareth swallowed. "I've been up since three."
"Why?"
He opened his hand.
The band lay in his palm, plain gold, worn on the inside from twenty-two years in a coat pocket.
"I bought two rings on Fennel Row," he said. "The heron one and this one. The jeweler still has his order book, and it lists one heron ring and one band. He has never made a copy of either."
He looked at me.
"Lavinia lied to me in my own office, to your face and mine. I stood there and let her."
"You did," I said.
"I know."
"I said your name twice. You said she was right."
"I know what I said, Nesta."
I should have stepped aside. I did not, and the three of us stood in the doorway in the gray light until a board creaked in the hall behind me.
My mother had come out of her room in the borrowed nightgown.
She had left her hands bare.
Gareth saw them before he saw her face.
The band slid from his fingers and rang across the porch, and he went down on one knee to get it, and stayed there.
"Adela," he said.
She stood in the hall with her arms at her sides and looked at him.
Her mouth did not open.
