Chapter 15: No One Can Hear

They let me make one call, and I used it on Rhys.

He picked up on the first ring.

"I'm in a cell on Cutler Street," I said. "Don't come. They won't let you see me before Friday. Stay at the lake with my mother and Gareth, and keep the doors locked."

"Nesta."

"It's Lavinia. She has a lawyer and a detective, and the ring is item forty-one in an inventory she wrote herself."

"I'm coming."

"You're not. If you leave my mother, who sits in that kitchen?"

He was quiet on the line for a moment.

"I'll be there when you get out," he said.

The matron took the receiver out of my hand.

The cell stayed cold, and the day went out of the high grating in the wall.

I sat on the bench with my back against the tile and thought about my mother's hand closing around the band.

At seven the lock turned.

"Visitor," the matron said, and stood aside for a woman in a gray coat and white gloves.

"Thank you," Lavinia told her. "A few minutes. I owe this girl an apology."

The matron looked at me.

I said nothing, and she went away down the corridor with her keys.

Lavinia waited until the footsteps were gone.

Then she looked up at the corner of the ceiling, where a camera sat in a cage.

Its red light was out.

"It has been broken since spring," she said pleasantly. "I donate to this station."

She sat down on the other end of the bench and arranged her skirt.

I did not move.

"You can scream," she said. "Nobody here will come."

"I wasn't going to scream."

"Good. Then listen, because you should know it before Saturday." She smiled. "Your mother had everything, you know. A house with a heron on the gate. A bed with her own name stitched on the sheets. And I ate in the kitchen after the plates were cleared, and wore her old dresses taken in at the waist."
