Chapter 22: What He Gave Up
On Monday morning we sat in the lawyer's office, the same one who had read Rhys's father's will aloud.
It was a wood-paneled room with a view of the harbor.
I sat beside Rhys with my burned sleeves rolled up and my hands bandaged.
Lavinia had been charged on Friday with arson, fraud, forgery and the unlawful confinement of Adela Lorrimer, and the judge had refused her bail.
The trust vote she had held for twenty-two years was frozen the same afternoon.
"Which leaves you as the last trustee," the lawyer told Rhys. "The freight company is yours. The house is yours. The Mercer trust is yours, and its holdings."
"And what the court takes back from her?"
"The Lorrimer estate goes to Adela Lorrimer by order of the probate judge. Nothing there is yours or hers."
"Good."
Rhys pulled the papers toward him.
They were stacked an inch thick, tabbed in yellow where he had to sign.
I watched him read the first page, and the second.
"What are you doing?" the lawyer asked.
"Reading."
"You don't have to sign anything today."
"I want to sign it today."
He picked up a pen.
It was a cheap pen from the lawyer's own desk.
On my first day in that house, Rhys had told me never to sign anything Lavinia handed me with a pen.
"The freight company goes into a fund," Rhys said. "Owned by the men and women who work the docks. The house on Harrow Hill is sold, and the money pays the families of the Suncoast mine workers who were bought and sold in the ledger. Every name in it, as far as anyone can trace them."
