Chapter 6: Paid in Full
I woke up at half past five to the smell of coffee and the sound of someone hitting a bag downstairs.
The bed beside me was empty and still warm.
I lay in the gray light and listened to the steady thud, thud, thud coming up through the floor.
I smiled at the ceiling.
Then I got up, found Gina's gray hoodie on the chair, and pulled it over my head.
It came down to my knees.
The kitchen was small, with one pan on the stove and a mug waiting on the counter with a note under it.
Back at 6:30. Eggs in the fridge. Don't leave. G.
I read it twice.
I wasn't going anywhere, but it was nice to be asked in writing.
Standing there with my coffee, I looked properly at the room.
It was tidy and plain.
There were photos on the brick wall of a thick-necked old man with a towel around his shoulders, a young Gina beside him in a ring with a gold trophy, and the two of them laughing in a doorway.
The frame above the couch was the only thing without a picture.
It was good wood, oiled and dusted, with an empty mat inside.
Someone had left it empty on purpose, and it bothered me more than I could say.
The door opened behind me.
"You stayed," Gina said.
She was sweaty from her run in a black jacket, with her hair standing up.
"You asked in writing."
"I'm a professional." She crossed the room and kissed me on the mouth, quick and warm, tasting like cold air. "Good morning."
"Good morning."
"You're wearing my hoodie."
"Do you want it back?"
"Not yet."
She hooked one finger in the neck of it and drew me toward her.
"I need a shower," she said. "Come help."
"Help how?"
Her eyebrow went up.
I followed her into a bathroom with an old tub and a rattling pipe.
She turned on the water, and it ran hot, filling the room with steam.
