Chapter 18: Fifty Pounds of Flour
At noon, Marcy and I crouched under the pass-through window of the test kitchen with a stopwatch and a bag of pretzels.
"This is a terrible idea," I whispered.
"It's an excellent idea," Marcy whispered. "I've prepared. I've got snacks."
"He said just the two of them."
"He said it to Victor. Nobody said it to me."
Through the gap I could see the steel counters and a rack of copper pots.
Somebody had left a fifty-pound sack of flour on the prep table.
Domenic came in first.
He took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and loosened the very expensive tie.
Victor came in a minute later and stopped at the far counter.
He kept the length of the table between them.
"Sit," Domenic said.
"I'll stand."
"You always stand. It's the one thing about you that's loud."
"Say it, Dom."
"You signed my name on a marriage license."
"I signed mine. V. D. Yours was D. V. The county read it correctly."
"That's a technicality."
"It's a name."
Domenic put both hands on the counter and leaned in.
"Three years of texts," he said. "My tea order. My fiancée. All of it, in your handwriting. And the one thing I owned, you took in a hospital in the middle of the night."
"You didn't own her."
"I'd asked her. In a restaurant. With a ring."
"You sent me to your own party to wear your face," Victor said, "because you were in Chicago closing something."
"You've worn it at every family dinner since we were nine. It's the only favor you ever do well."
