Chapter 20: The Rest of the File
Victor signed the last page of the annulment papers in the same neat hand he uses on delivery forms.
He capped the pen and slid the folder across Sal's blotter to me.
"My page is done," he said. "Whenever you want it."
His voice did not shake, and that frightened me more than if it had.
"The lawyer files at nine on Friday," Sal said. "It needs both signatures, or it's a very nice folder."
I put it in my bag, unsigned.
Nobody in the room said a word about the fact that I took it home.
On Thursday at half past noon, the chair of the board stood in the middle of the test kitchen with two other board members and a plate of untouched biscotti.
She was seventy-four, small, and dressed in gray, and she had run the board for twenty years without once raising her voice.
Dean had arranged the visit.
He had also arranged the cart with the projector, the pointer, and a very large screen on a stand.
"Madam Chair," he said warmly, "I'd like to share a short piece of context before we tour. I'm only concerned about the company's image."
Sal sat in a folding chair at the edge of the room with his arms crossed.
Domenic stood by the walk-in cooler, and Victor stood behind the long steel counter with his hands flat on it.
I stood by the sink, and Marcy stood next to me, holding a cardboard tray of tea.
"Concern," Marcy whispered. "He's already done it once. I'm counting."
Dean clicked, and the screen showed the flour fight from above.
The clip played out in silence.
When it ended, he let the room sit with it.
"Two senior officers," he said. "A hidden marriage. A fifty-pound sack of product, destroyed. I'm not accusing anyone. I'm saying the board is entitled to know."
"Mr. Hollinger," the chair said, "that is a very short film."
