Chapter 23: Settlement
Sabrina reached the register before anyone else did.
Her hands closed on the edge of the leather cover, and she pulled.
Nate's hand came down over hers and held the book to the table, gently and completely.
"Let go," he said.
"It's mine. That's my marriage."
"Then you'll want it where the county can find it."
Ross's mother stepped between them, small and upright in her navy dress.
"Sit down, dear," she said to Sabrina, in the voice she used on grocery clerks. "You've done quite enough standing."
Two hotel guards came down the aisle, and the managing partner met them halfway.
"Ms. Keene," he said. "Keene Events is released from every contract with this firm, effective tonight. Please collect your things from the coat check."
"You can't do that."
"I just did."
Sabrina looked around the ballroom.
Every table was watching her, the clients, the partners and their wives, the quartet with their bows lowered.
Nobody smiled at her.
She let go of the register, and the guards walked her out.
Ross didn't follow.
He stood beside the stage with his arms hanging, and when the managing partner turned to him, he said, "I'll clear my desk in the morning."
A week later I sat in Geraldine's office with a cup of decaf, and for once I was allowed to finish it.
"Three things," Geraldine said, and put three papers on the desk.
"The county has voided the Keene recording. Ross filed the petition himself, sworn, with the twelve witness statements attached."
"He filed it?"
"Himself. His lawyer advised against it." Geraldine tapped the second sheet. "The firm has suspended him without pay, pending a review by the state board. He'll likely lose his license for some years."
