Chapter 24: The Last Page
Three weeks after the scaffold came down, Harvest Day came in clear and bright, with a wind off the river that smelled of apples.
It was the very morning the book had set for her death, and she was alive to see it.
Aveline stood at the back of the Great Hall in a green gown she had picked out herself.
She watched the court fill up with people who had once laughed at her.
Nobody laughed now.
The little prince walked up the aisle first, in black velvet that fit him this time, carrying the crown on a cushion with both hands.
He looked terrified and proud.
Behind him came Torin.
He wore no velvet and no jewels, only a plain dark coat and the iron circle of the old kings of Aldermere.
The old lord with the white beard stood at the foot of the dais.
"By the vote of the council," he said, "and by the voice of the realm, we name Torin Deincourt king."
"Does any man here say otherwise?"
Nobody did.
The old lord lifted the crown and set it on Torin's head with shaking hands.
Torin took one step down from the dais.
He took another.
He walked the whole length of the hall, past the lords and the ladies and the guards, until he stood in front of Aveline.
