Chapter 14: Her Side of the Bed

It was nearly three in the morning when Jo let us back into her apartment.

She did not turn on the overhead light.

She stood in the dark kitchen with her coat still on and her back to me.

"I thought I would be glad," she said. "When Brant heard it."

"I know."

"I'm not glad. I'm just so tired of being angry at a dead man."

I put the kettle on the burner, the way I had before.

This time she let me.

"I knew about you," she said. "Not your name. Just that there was someone."

"Morris told you?"

"I found a birthday card on his desk when I was twenty-one. Happy birthday, kid, from the boy who never says thank you."

"It was my twenty-third."

"I was furious," Jo said. "I sat in his study and read it six times."

"He had a grandchild, and he was sending cards to a stranger."

"He wasn't sending them. He kept them. They were drafts."

She turned around.

Her eyes were dry, and that was worse.

"He asked me to Sunday dinner every week of my life, and every week there was an empty chair at the end of the table."
