Chapter 24: Time to Shine
We left Frederick before dawn, with the urn on the back seat in a seat belt.
Jo had insisted on the seat belt.
"He always drove like he was late," she said. "I'm not letting him fly through the windshield."
"He's ashes."
"He'd find a way."
The road climbed into the Catoctin hills, and the sky went from black to gray to the color of a peach.
The spot was a granite ledge above a creek valley, with a view of nothing but trees.
Morris had written it on the back of a grocery receipt and left it in the third drawer under the watch.
Jo had found it on Sunday.
Where I proposed to your grandmother, the receipt said. She said no twice.
We parked on a gravel pull-off and walked the last quarter mile.
Frost lay in the ruts of the trail.
I carried the thermos, and Jo carried the urn against her chest like a sleeping child.
At the ledge she stopped and looked out.
The valley was filled with mist, and the first light was touching the top of the oaks.
