Chapter 22: The Dowager Pays
The Dowager did not hurry.
She crossed the hall on her stick, and the crowd moved aside for her as it had for the Earl, but in a different way.
They moved for the Earl out of habit.
They moved for her.
She stopped before the Earl of Marchbank at the foot of the stair.
"Lionel," she said.
"You may have your forty thousand pounds on Monday morning."
"I will not take it from Denholm's purse," said the Earl.
"Denholm has none."
"It is not from Denholm's purse."
She turned her head.
"My banker's man is standing by the door with a draft," said the Dowager.
"Come forward, if you please."
A grey little man in a black coat came forward with a silver salver.
On it lay a banker's draft, folded in three, with a seal.
"That is my jointure," said the Dowager.
"Forty-one thousand pounds, the whole of what Wrenfield land left me when I was widowed."
"I had it made over to my own name three weeks ago."
