Chapter 24: The Duchess of Denholm
We were married at St George's on the first Saturday in September, at eleven in the morning.
The Dowager gave me away.
She walked me up the aisle on her stick in plain black silk with no diamonds, and she did not look at the pews.
Halfway to the altar she said, very low, "Your mother would have done it better."
"My mother is in the front pew with a pie in her bag," I said.
"I know," said the Dowager.
"I could smell it at the door."
The church was full.
The front pews on the bride's side held forty families from Mill Court in their Sunday best, and they had brought their own cushions.
Behind them sat a row of marchionesses and baronets who had decided, on the strength of three newspapers, that they were enchanted.
Rosamund sat with her surgeon, who had a bandage on one thumb and was already half asleep.
Tilly sat beside my mother with a posy of cabbage roses she had stolen from the Denholm greenhouse, and she wept from the first hymn.
Hugh waited at the rail in a dark blue coat.
