Chapter 24: The Last Page, Again
On the first anniversary of the day he signed, Jamie sat at the marble island with a glass of sparkling cider.
He watched a roast chicken come out of the oven.
It was golden.
It was golden all over, with crackling skin and a lemon in the cavity.
A smell that went straight to the back of his knees.
"No," Carly said.
"Yes," Roman said.
"That's not yours."
"It's mine."
"You bought it from somewhere."
"I read it in a book. I stood over it. I took its temperature three times."
Dennis Marlin, at the end of the island in his grey cardigan, took off his round glasses.
He cleaned them on his sleeve.
"I have known this man for thirty-one years," he said. "I'd like to be on the record that I did not believe it was possible."
"It's a chicken, Dennis."
"It is a miracle with potatoes."
The potatoes were soft.
Esme sat in the high chair at Jamie's elbow, five months old.
She was gloriously uninterested in everything but her own foot, which she was working on with a frown.
She had dark hair that stood up at the back, and her father's grey eyes, and Jamie's chin.
Roman carved.
He did it, one slice at a time.
He set a plate in front of Jamie with a pinch of salt on the side.
Jamie picked up his fork.
He cut a corner of white meat, and chewed, and the whole table watched his face.
It was warm, and tender, and tasted of butter and thyme.
It tasted like food.
He put the fork down.
"Say something," Roman said, and there was a note in it that nobody but Jamie could hear.
"It's good."
"It's..."
"It's good, Roman. It's actually good."
The silence lasted two full seconds.
Then Carly burst into tears.
"I'm sorry," she sobbed. "I'm so sorry, it's the first good thing he's made, and I was at the first dinner, and I ate the pink chicken, and I thought, that man's going to die of love and food poisoning."
