Chapter 16: What I'd Pay

Heath's POV

I walked out onto the porch in my bare feet and picked up the coffee Summer had left.

Then I poured it off the rail into the dead grass.

She was still standing by her car, forty feet away, watching me.

"That was rude," she said.

"You can drive off now."

"I'd like to talk to you first. Alone." She tipped her head. "Without her speaking for you."

Behind me the cabin door was shut.

Ainsley had wanted to come out, and I had asked her to stay in.

I walked across the gravel and stopped an arm's length from Summer.

Up close her eyes were the clearest I had ever seen.

I wondered how I had ever called that kindness.

"Say it," I said. "Whatever you need to say."

"I'm not your enemy, Heath."

"You told Ainsley I'm a fare."

"I told her the truth." She said it gently, as she said everything. "It's a sad truth. But you'd be dead anyway, one way or another. It's only a question of who gets to go home with something."

"And you want it to be you."

"I'm very good at the last week." Her voice softened. "Come with me to the clinic. I'll be warm. I'll never leave the room. You won't be afraid, and I'll hold your hand the whole way."

For a second I almost laughed.

I had spent my whole life sure I was the one who got to be careless, and sure nobody got hurt.

"No," I said.

"You haven't thought."

"I've thought. I'm done being handled."

She held my eye.

"Then I'll take you in front of everyone," she said. "I have the papers and the doctor's note. By noon you'll be mine."

"Noon," I said.

"Noon."

"Then come to the Lakeview Club at noon." I gave her the smile I had given a thousand waiters. "My father's table. The whole board, my mother, the lot. Bring your papers, and we'll sign it in front of everyone."
