Chapter 13: CEO's Barista
By nine o'clock the line at the Gull & Kettle ran out the door and down Wharf Lane.
Nobody was there for the coffee.
Perrin knew it by the phones.
They came up as he reached for the milk, one after another, small black rectangles held at chest height.
A woman in a puffy coat whispered to her friend, and both of them looked straight at him.
"Next," Agnes called from the register, in a voice that carried to the street.
A man in a fleece vest leaned over the counter.
"Is it true what the paper says?" he said. "That you're sleeping with the boss's nephew?"
"Sir, I'm taking orders," Perrin said.
"Because it looks to me like some people get ahead by being pretty."
Perrin's hands began to shake on the steaming pitcher.
He set it down very carefully.
"I make eleven drinks an hour," he said. "I've worked this counter for three years. If you'd like a coffee, I'd be glad to make you one."
