Chapter 21: The Key on the Otter
Malcolm woke to sunlight on his face and the smell of burned toast.
He lay still for a long time without opening his eyes.
His body told him the hour before the clock did.
It was nearly ten.
He had slept three hours past dawn, in the middle of a bed, without a single dream.
He opened his eyes.
The pillow beside him held the dent of a head and a single sandy curl.
Somewhere below, a voice was humming a tune that wandered off key and wandered back.
Malcolm lay with his hand on the cool sheet and let the feeling come up through him slowly.
For nine years he had woken at four, drenched and rigid.
For nine years he had listened for a door that never opened.
This morning there was only a hum, and the clink of a pan, and a man in his kitchen swearing softly at a toaster.
Malcolm put the back of his wrist over his eyes.
It was the sound of a house with somebody living in it.
He found his robe and went down.
Perrin stood at the stove in Malcolm's old shirt and a pair of gray wool socks.
