Chapter 21: Payday
Arthur's POV
On my first Friday at the plumbing-supply wholesaler's, four men cornered me in the break room and asked if I was the consultant.
I had dropped a case of copper elbows on Tuesday, in front of everyone.
Nobody had arranged for it to be fine.
The foreman had said, "Pick it up," and I had picked it up, and it was the best Tuesday of my life.
On Friday afternoon, the foreman sat across the break table from me, with the forklift driver on my left and two loaders blocking the door.
"Last January," the foreman said, "they sent a man in a parka with a stopwatch."
"He had us prop open the bay doors for three hours to test our resilience," the forklift driver said.
"I know that man," I said. "He billed six thousand dollars to open windows."
"We'd have done it for fifty," the forklift driver said.
"You wear glasses," the foreman said. "You say 'excuse me' to pallets. You asked what our throughput was."
"I asked what throughput meant," I said.
