My wedding cost three hundred and forty dollars, and nobody put the price on anything.
The VFW hall had a drop ceiling, a bar with a rope across it and a banner that said WELCOME HOME from some earlier occasion.
Arthur had paid the deposit on Tuesday.
He asked me first, in the kitchen, with the booking form in his hand.
"May I put down the hundred?" he said.
"Yes," I said.
The card reader at the post desk had said Approved in its cheerful voice.
"It does that," the post commander told him, and gave him a receipt.
Peter handed out the place cards at the door.
Each one had a guest's name on it and nothing else.
"No prices," Peter told every guest. "Just names."
The cook and the groundskeeper arrived in a pickup with a roasting pan and a flat of eggs.
The woman from the food bank came in carrying a slow cooker with a goat on the lid.
"Wednesday's chili," she said. "Four weeks of it so far. Everyone's asking about the goat."
At two, a long black car stopped outside, and Winifred stepped down in a gray suit and pearls.
