Chapter 19: Open House
Garrick Spindler's open house had balloons.
They were silver, with BUILDING WHAT'S NEXT printed on each one.
They were tied to the iron gate where the pear tree dropped its yellow leaves.
There was a folding table with a white cloth and a tray of tiny sandwiches.
There was a rendering of a glass tower on an easel, and a speaker the size of a toaster playing soft jazz.
There were also twenty-six people in good coats, who had come to see a property being sold out from under its tenants.
Teddy stood at the back fence in his green apron and counted them.
"Twenty-six," said Poppy at his elbow. "That's my count of his guests. Ours is eighty."
"Ours?"
"I called everybody."
He turned.
They were coming up the alley behind the yard in twos and threes.
The old woman with the seed packet came, and the man from the orchids, and the teenager.
A dozen regulars carried plants in their arms.
Poppy's van backed in through the gate with its doors open and the whole of Understory stacked in the back.
