Chapter 24: Every Pair
"Magnus," said Teddy.
His voice was very quiet for a man holding a pair of old gray underwear.
The jar of slips stood on the sill.
The teenager had left the room, tactfully.
Magnus filled the bedroom doorway in his white apron with the ladle still in his hand.
He looked at what Teddy was holding.
He looked at the ceiling.
"That," he said, "is the first one."
"February third."
"Yes."
"Two years ago."
"Yes."
"That's the day I moved in. You didn't start in September."
"No."
Teddy sat down on the edge of the bed, in the middle of forty coats.
"Tell me."
Magnus put the ladle on the dresser, a careful inch from the edge.
He sat beside Teddy and looked at the pair in his hands, not at his face.
"Your moving box split open on the porch," he said. "A pair of these fell on the mat. I picked them up to bring them to your door."
"And?"
"You had put a fern on my doormat. With a card."
"I remember."
"I stood there, holding your underwear and your fern, and I could not make my mouth work." Magnus rubbed his beard. "So I washed them."
