Chapter 6: Saint Brigid's

I did not go home from the bank.

I drove to Saint Brigid's with the folder on the passenger seat and parked beside the rectory.

The old priest was in his office, eating soup from a thermos.

He had married me, and he had buried my mother, and he still called me "Clara, dear" the way he had when I was twenty-seven.

"You look pale," he said. "Sit, sit."

"Father, I need to ask about my wedding."

"Ah." He smiled. "A happy day. You wore your mother's pearls."

"Who took the marriage license to the courthouse afterward?"

He blinked at me.

"Why, Kyle's mother," he said. "Joan always does that for the parish. Thirty years she's been taking our paperwork down to the county. The couple sign the form at the sacristy table, I sign it, and I hand it to Joan."

"You gave it to Joan, not Kyle?"

"Kyle was busy with the photographer. Joan said she'd see to it Monday."

I put my hand flat on the desk to keep it quiet.

"Father, the county has no record that Kyle and I were ever married."

The spoon stopped halfway to his mouth.

"That can't be right."

"I'm sure it isn't what anyone intended," I said carefully. "But I need to see what the church has. May I?"

He set down the spoon and looked at me for a long moment.

"The parish register is in the vestry," he said. "I'll fetch it. It's heavy."

He came back with a green cloth book and laid it on the blotter.
