Chapter 17: One Hundred and Fifty-Five Thousand

Soledad's text sat on my phone for two days.

The new lawyer printed it, filed it, and told me to answer nothing.

I did not sleep, and I did not let Camila out of my sight.

Then Rodrigo came back to the clinic on a Thursday, and this time he wore a suit.

It was the navy one from the night I left him, pressed, with a clean white shirt.

He brought no bag.

The new lawyer, Emiliano and I sat at the long table in the back room.

We were going through the ledger page by page with highlighters.

He stood in the doorway until I looked up.

"May I?" he asked.

"It's not my room," I said. "Ask her."

The lawyer waved a highlighter at a chair.

He did not sit.

He took a plain white envelope with no wax from his inside pocket.

He laid it on the table in front of me.

"Open it," he said.

I did.

It was a cashier's check, drawn on his personal bank, made out to Alma Tejeda.

I read the number twice.

One hundred fifty-five thousand dollars.

"Thirty-one months," Rodrigo said. "Every payment my mother took from her father's trust, to the dollar. The interest is coming. My accountant is calculating it."

"Where did you get it?"

"I sold the black car and my father's watch collection. I cashed out the account I opened at twenty-two."

He swallowed.

"She can freeze the company. She cannot freeze what was mine before I knew her."
