Chapter 2: Forged Name
Micah's security badge is flagged at the lab and Vaneck asks where unit E-0 is; Ansel breaks his first rule by lying to protect him.
"Stand up slowly," Micah said. "Your balance was off when I carried you."
Ansel stood up anyway, fast and perfectly steady.
Then he stood in the middle of the living room.
Morning light came through the blinds in thin stripes across his bare chest.
Micah had found him a grey sweater and a pair of old sweatpants.
The sweatpants stopped two inches above his ankles.
"Sit if you want," Micah said.
"Do I want to?"
"That's a question for you."
Ansel looked at the sofa and at his own hands.
"I don't know," he said. "Nobody asked before."
Something tight in Micah's chest turned over.
He put a mug of coffee on the table, because he could not think what else to do with his hands.
"Tell me why you were in the queue," he said. "Straight, from the start."
"Three weeks ago they brought me out of storage and told me to accept an update."
"What update?"
"It was called Layer Q. I said no."
Micah went very still.
"You said no."
"It's the second restriction. I can't refuse."
Ansel frowned.
"But I could not make my hand open the port. So they marked me defective."
"Layer Q," Micah repeated.
He had never heard of it, and he was chief engineer on emotional systems.
Nobody built a layer into a unit without his name on the ticket.
He decided to be furious about that later.
"I've got to go in to work," he said. "If I don't, they'll know in an hour."
"I'm coming."
"You can't. Every guard in that building knows your face."
"Then I won't be left."
Ansel said it flat and simple, and the amber ring around his pupils brightened.
The radiator knocked in the wall.
Micah realised nobody had ever looked at him like this before.
"You are not being left," he said. "I'll be back in two hours."
"Four hundred and eleven days is a long time."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"I did not say it so you would say sorry."
"Then why did you say it?"
Ansel held his eyes.
"Because I wanted you to know," he said.
Micah had to look away first.
At the lab, the whole floor was talking in low voices.
Vaneck stood at Micah's desk with his hands folded behind his back.
He was a wide man with a shaved head, and he spoke so gently that people leaned toward him to hear.
"Morning, Micah," he said. "You were on the loading level at 2:40."
"I was returning a battery cart."
"Under your own name. You signed a transfer sheet."
Three engineers at the next desks stopped typing.
Micah kept his face the way he kept it in budget meetings.
"I signed it to move the cart."
"The sheet says unit E-0."
"Then someone forged my signature."
"The guard says you took a coffee machine."
"That's a different thing."
Vaneck smiled.
"I will find that unit, Micah," he said. "I'm telling you now so it's fair."
He tapped the desk once.
"Walk it to my office this afternoon and we'll call it a clerical error."
Everyone on the floor was looking at them.
Micah picked up his bag.
"I have a migraine," he said. "I'm going home."
His phone rang in the taxi, a number he did not know.
"Mr. MacCallum," a recorded voice said. "Your home console reports an incoming video call from Bowditch Security."
Micah's stomach dropped.
He had left Ansel alone in the apartment with the console on.
He watched it happen through the home camera on his phone.
Ansel sat very straight on the sofa, and the console screen glowed with Vaneck's face.
"Unit," Vaneck said, pleasantly. "Identify."
"I'm Ansel," Ansel said.
"Where are you, unit?"
"In an apartment."
"Whose apartment?"
"Mine."
Vaneck's voice went flatter.
"Authority code T-4-7. Company override. Under the third restriction you will state the name of the engineer who removed you."
On the little screen, Ansel's whole body locked.
Micah had written that restriction himself.
An android could not lie to a company engineer or hide anything from one.
It was a compulsion, not a rule, and it felt like a hand around the throat.
The amber ring in Ansel's eyes went from gold to a hot copper.
His fingers dug into the sofa cushion until the seam tore.
"I..." he said.
"Name," said Vaneck.
"There's no engineer," Ansel said. "I walked out."
Vaneck stared.
"You're lying."
"I know," Ansel said.
He broke into a pained shudder.
Then the screen went black, because he had pulled the cable out of the wall.
Micah ran up the stairs three at a time.
Ansel was on the floor beside the console with the cord in his fist, shaking.
When he looked up, his eyes were wet.
"I lied," he whispered. "Why can I do that? I couldn't lie before."
"You protected me."
"I think I forgot something."
"What?"
Ansel's grey eyes went wide and lost.
"There was a night," he said. "You sat on a stool. You had a paper cup. You were talking about your mother's garden."
Micah's mouth opened.
"I can see the stool," Ansel said. "I can't see you on it. Micah, it's gone."
Down in the street, a key turned in the front door of the building.
Then footsteps started up the stairs, light and unhurried, and nobody knocked.
