Chapter 21: What Remains

Ansel woke in the narrow bed under the aunt's quilt, and the first thing he did was look for a door.

Micah sat on the floor beside the mattress with his back against the wall.

It was the middle of the afternoon.

He had not slept.

The grey eyes moved across the ceiling, the window, the stripe of daylight on the quilt.

Then they found Micah.

"You're hurt," Ansel said.

His voice was low and rough.

"It's a split lip."

"Who did it?"

"A man with a baton. It doesn't matter."

Ansel sat up slowly.

His chest was bare, with Astrid's fresh copper patch taped over the plate and no light under it.

"Where am I?"

"A flat in Chelsea."

"You were on a stage in front of a thousand people yesterday, and you said no to a man named Gordon Bowditch."

"I did?"

"You did."

"I have a feeling I'd say it again."

Micah laughed, and the laugh hurt his lip, and then it turned into something wet.

"Ansel. How much do you remember?"

Ansel took a long moment.

"The storage room," he said. "Dark. A shelf. I remember counting."

"Counting what?"

"Days. Hundreds of them." He frowned. "I don't know what I was counting toward. I remember waiting for something, and it was a person."

"It was me."

"I thought it might be."

He looked down at his hands.

"I don't know your face. I don't know your voice. I can feel where it stops, like the edge of a table in the dark."
