At the door he stopped and looked back at the fridge, at Max's dinosaurs.
Then he went down my steps to his truck.
The kitchen clock said twelve-twenty.
On Saturday night, the Mill was full of light.
Amber up the stone walls. Candles on twenty-two tables. White hydrangea and eucalyptus in low silver bowls.
The big wheel turned slowly outside the tall windows, lit from below.
Two hundred and twenty people in their best clothes.
I was by the kitchen doors in a black dress and flat shoes, with a headset on and a clipboard against my hip.

Table fourteen.
My place card was still on it, next to the DJ's.

Pamela first, in navy silk, on her husband's arm.
His sister and her husband.
Jason in a charcoal suit, with Max in front of him in a clip-on tie.
