Chapter 24: A New Group
"For a wedding?" I asked.
"For whatever you want," Grady said. "No charge. The deposit's already paid."
Max looked up from the duck.
"Can it be a party?"
"What kind of party?"
He thought about it, very seriously, with a pizza crust in his hand.
"One where everybody gets a chair."
My divorce was final on December 12.
It took ten minutes in a courtroom downtown. Jason didn't look at me once.
I drove straight from the courthouse to a party store and bought forty folding chairs.
Then I drove them to the Mill in the party store's rental van.
Grady came down the loading dock steps while I was opening the back doors.
He laughed when he saw the receipt.
"I own two hundred and sixty chairs, Ashwell."
"These are mine."
"Final?" he asked.
"Ten minutes."
He folded the receipt and put it in his shirt pocket.
Then he took my face in both hands and kissed me, right there on the dock, in the cold.
Not careful. Not quick.
Seven weeks of quick goodnights on my porch went out of both of us at once.
I grabbed the front of his coat and pulled him down to me.
He walked me backward until my shoulders hit the brick beside the door.
