Roderick's teeth were no more frightening than the things he'd said with his mouth closed.
I kept reminding myself of that while he watched us.
Lucan's hand stayed relaxed beside his leg.
Roderick's two friends kept looking at Lucan's plain coat.
Lucan kept looking at the front door.
Agnes took a cushion from the bench and put it behind a shaking worker's back.
The young woman sat gratefully.
My aunt looked at the cushion as though she'd discovered a use for it nobody had mentioned.
Winnie opened the sitting room door.
"There's tea if anybody wants it," she told the household.
Roderick laughed.
"You think tea will settle this?"
"No," she said.
"I think some people would like tea while you decide whether to behave."
The shorter visitor looked toward the room.
His companion gave him an irritated glance.
He stayed where he was, but his performance had lost a little conviction.
