Lucan's POV
The next afternoon, Elspeth found the ring box in my hand and asked whether Hettie had agreed to it.
"I haven't asked her yet."
"I meant the pond," she said.
It had rained since morning.
I had chosen the pond because we'd first laughed there together.
The water now reached the edge of the bench.
A frog sat on the dry inch at its center, looking better established than I was.
"There's room beside him," Elspeth said.
"Perhaps he'll be a witness."
I put the ring box in my pocket and went back indoors.
I had visited Hettie in Leeds three times.
She'd visited here twice, and once brought her own book because she wanted to finish it.
I wanted her to bring books for the rest of my life.
I also wanted to stop arranging the room before I knew whether she wanted to sit in it.
