Hettie's POV
"Yes," I told him.
Lucan looked at me, waiting for the rest.
"I want to marry you."
He closed his eyes briefly, and I touched his cheek until he opened them.
"I'd like you to look pleased," I added.
He laughed and drew me close enough that the book slid off my knee.
I caught it against his waist and left it there while he kissed me.
"I love you," I said against his cheek.
His hand tightened over mine.
"I love you too," he answered, quietly enough that I had to stay close to hear it.
He put the ring on my hand and inspected it with delight he made no attempt to hide.
I kissed his forehead while he was looking down.
"I want a room with morning light," I told him.
He looked toward the bright windows above the garden.
"For your books?"
"For reading them without a candle ceremony."
He smiled and kissed my fingers.
"You can choose it yourself," he said.
I held my hand against the light and turned the green stone toward him.
