Chapter 16: What the Braid Said

Thora's POV

Heath hit the cottage door with the flat of his hand at ten at night.

I opened it on the chain.

He was in the pale blue shirt, untucked, with the cuffs undone, and he smelled of whiskey.

"Let me in," he said.

"No."

"Thora, I'm asking nicely."

"You're drunk on my doorstep. Say it from there."

He put both hands on the frame.

"I was in the lodge bar an hour ago," he said. "The woman with the braid was there, alone, because nobody she knows will speak to her now."

"I wonder why."

"She bought me a drink." His voice cracked. "She said Brielle told them all in the spa, last week, laughing, that the boatman at this lake has Posy's eyes."

I held the door and said nothing.

"Is it true?"

"I'm not the one to ask."

"You were the one holding the camera." He pushed his face closer to the gap. "You looked at my daughter through a lens for an hour on Saturday. Did you see it?"

I had promised Nolan I would keep this, and I did not owe Heath a single word of it.

"It isn't mine to answer," I said. "It's Nolan's, and it's Brielle's."

"So it's true."

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't have to." He laughed, a horrible sound. "You planned this. You came up here, you took the cottage, you slept with him, and you went through my daughter's face for a weapon."
