Chapter 14: The Hearing
The hearing room was a windowless conference room on the second floor of the Tri-State admin building.
Monday, ten sharp, and the air conditioner already rattled.
Three people sat behind the long table.
They were the program director, an instructor with a legal pad, and a woman from the college's office with a recorder.
I sat on the left with my hands folded, because folded hands could not shake.
Maxwell sat beside me in the same tie he hated.
Across from us, Norma arranged her manila folder, her purse, and a tissue she did not need yet.
She had dressed in gray and pearls.
She looked like a woman at her own mother's funeral.
"We'll begin," the director said. "Mrs. Reeve, you filed the complaint. Please say what you want the review to hear."
Norma dabbed her eye with a tissue that was still folded.
"I want the truth," she said. "And I'm afraid it's worse than a loan."
She turned the folder toward them and slid out a bank statement.
The director read the figure and looked at me. "Ms. Ellinghaus, did you accept this money?"
