Norma stood in the gap of the curtain in dead silence.
Nobody in the bay breathed.
"I carried you for nine months," she said, hoarse. "I stayed up every night of your childhood."
"I know you did."
"Then how can you..."
"Because I'm alive, Mom." His eyes were closing, but his voice held. "Go home. I'll call when I want you. It might be a while."
The nurse arrived behind her with a clipboard.
"Ma'am, he's asked that you be removed from his visitor list. I'll walk you to the elevator."
Norma did not argue.
She looked at me once, a long and hollow look, and then she turned and walked out between the nurse and the wall.
She did not slam anything, and she did not cry.
Her flat shoes tapped down the corridor until the elevator took them.
Calvin sank back into the pillows.
"Did I do that right?" he mumbled.
"Yes," I said, and I didn't trust my voice with a single other word.
He was asleep before I reached the door.
