Chapter 23: The Date

I woke at five and lay in the dark counting ceiling boards.

Maxwell was already awake beside me, on his back, one arm folded behind his head.

"You didn't sleep," he said.

"I did for a bit."

"For forty minutes. I watched the clock too."

"You said you'd count with me."

"I'm counting."

I turned and pressed my face into his shoulder.

"It was three-ten in the afternoon," I said. "I looked at the clock above the vending machines when the nurse ran in."

"Then we'll be busy at three-ten."

He kept his word.

By seven, we were in the truck, with a thermos and a list of four farm calls that stretched across three counties.

The first was an old horse with a bad hoof, and the second was a sow that had eaten something she should not have.

I held a lead rope and listened to a stethoscope and did not look at my phone.

At noon we ate sandwiches on the tailgate beside a fence line, and Maxwell told me a long, slow story about the llama.
