Chapter 16: Her Mother
On Friday morning she opened the screen door and found him asleep on the bottom step.
The rain had stopped.
He was wet through and folded around his knees.
Someone had tucked the Keeper's plaid blanket over his shoulders without waking him.
She stood over him for a full minute.
Then she nudged his shoe with her slipper.
"I go to Worcester on Sundays," she said, when his eyes opened.
"I can't hold a wheel in these gloves. You'll drive."
He looked up at her, gray-faced and unshaven.
"To see your mother."
"You've never once come."
"No."
"You'll come on Sunday."
The Worcester care home had a lobby that smelled of boiled carrots and floor polish.
Harbor House had lent her a wheelchair for the hour.
Matthias pushed it through the double doors without being asked, and the receptionist smiled at Esme and looked twice at him.
"Same time, Sunday girl," she said. "She's had a good morning. She asked for the radio."
