Chapter 18: The Concert
"Apply myself," Esme said.
She sat on the edge of her bed on Tuesday in the Keeper's wool socks.
She read the one page Ezra had faxed to the house.
"Under my name. With my scans. Read by someone who can see me."
"That's how he wrote it," Matthias said.
"And you carried it up the hill."
"I carried it."
"You didn't try to pick up the phone."
"It's in the can."
Something moved at the corner of her mouth.
It was not a smile, but it lived near one.
"I'll write to him tonight," she said. "Not because you brought it. Because it's mine to write."
"Yes."
"Where will you be Saturday?"
"Boston. Clarissa has rescheduled her benefit for Saturday."
He kept his hands still.
"I'm going to ask her one question."
"She'll lie."
"I know."
"Then ask it where people can hear," Esme said. "She only ever lies well to one person at a time."
On Saturday evening the courtyard room of the Boston Public Library was full again.
The same hundred and forty donors had come back, in better clothes, with their checkbooks open on their knees.
